American Surf Designs Pilot and NYTVF

Remember the tv pilot we were working on called "American Surf Designs"? Well, it has been receiving awards and screenings at various TV and film festivals from Hawaii to Florida this year. The biggest honor has just been annouced. "American Surf Designs" has been chosen to be screened at the prestigious New York Television Fesitval. Its a big deal and our producers will be there to schmooze and (hopefully) SELL IT! Wish us luck, congratulate our producers if you know them, and go to our homepage to see the pilot. The structure of the show will be something like "LA Ink" or "American Choppers" where different kinds of surfers- celebrities, charities, professionals, friends- order custom surfboards and the process is followed from start to finish. The show would also follow the hectic, exciting, sexy, REAL southern California surf lifestyle. Its not a glossy image of making surfboards, its the real portayal of craftsman dedicated to the art of stoking surfers out!

Surf 101 Lessons on Cloud 9

HSD's Andrea Holeman is teaching free "Surf 101" lessons in conjunction with Cloud 9 Medical Marijuana Dispensary in Ocean Beach this summer. The first lesson is slated for this Sat, July 10 at 4:20pm.

"Surf 101" is not just a surf lesson, we spend about an hour in the classroom (patients can medicate) going over things like surfboard design, different types or breaks, how swells are formed, or just watching videos. Then the class walks over to the beach for a surf session. Andrea can provide lessons for first-time, beginner, or intermediate surfers. Pleas sign up for the lesson at the front desk prior to Sat, as space is limited.

This should be a twice-a-month class. The next class is scheduled for Sat July 31 at 1:20. Cloud 9 hosts their monthly BBQ the last Sat of each month, so we thought it would be fun to medicate and surf FIRST. Please join us!

Next up for the following weekend [July 17th 7:30-11:00pm] we are having A VERY special guest Glenn Hening with an Audio Visual Presentation of the untold story behind one of the most significant milestones in the history of surfing. As Surfrider Takes off - The Visionary Surfers of 1984 lead the courage and teamwork that created the Surfrider Foundation. The story is entertaining and inspirational.

Right afterward is the band FMera as they extrapolate its post- Shoegazeresque era influences from bands such as Rid, Jets to Brazil, Interpol, the Smiths and Helio Sequence and masterfully weaves them into a mechanically timed and melodically spaced equation of undulating sounds. Heavy layers of rhythm guitar laced and chimed with notes ring high above the vocals, subdued in tone but not in volume. With lyrics such as "turning on the satellites" and "slowing down... break release", words are not just notes on a piece of paper; rather they are intricate layers of the melodies that form the mind and soul of FMera.

During HSD board demos, shaper JP Holeman is on site (or in the water) to talk to you about board design and help match you up with the right board. The point is to get wet and have some fun, so try 3 or 4 boards, mix up fins, and talk to a pro to improve your surfing experience.

Many of you have noticed and asked about my rad new jeans I've been rocking everywhere from business meetings to art events and even the Price is Right, so I thought I'd give you the entire rundown on custom designer jeans by Tony Esparza.

Tony launched American Made Premium Denim, AMPD a few years back. He understood that we live in our jeans and felt that our jeans should better reflect ourselves, be fashionable, and be comfortable. He started making one-of-a-kind jeans for his friends and local musicians and began to get orders. He stepped up production, made a few patterns and got them sewn in the US. Tony customizes each pair of jeans with custom washes, vintage fabrics, distressing, and sometimes cool vintage patches.

Its the details that make the jeans so rad. Tony uses vintage fabrics to line his jeans. He thinks its important that jeans look just as good on as they do thrown on the floor, so even the insides and pockets have stylish elements.

A few of the more savvy boutiques in the LA area now carry his jeans, including Miso Fly and Live Lounge. He works with the owner of each shop to use fabrics and washes for the customer. There is nothing available as hot as AMPD!

Tonight, there will be a party at Live Lounge and desinger Tony Esparza will be on hand to help fit you into a pair of jeans. There will also be music and cool recycled surf resin jewelry by HSD co-owner Andrea Holeman. Check it out if you are near Riverside tonight from 7-10pm.

Moving Shaping Rooms

For the past 3+ years JP has lived and shaped out of his home in Oceanside, until his wife, me, decided living anywhere other than a surfboard factory might be nice for change. So JP rented a shaping room from Bill Johnson (still in Oceanside, don't worry) and shaped his last boards at home last Friday.

JP was a little sad to say goodbye, but also excited for the new opportunity with Bill Johnson, and his now happy, dust-free wife.

After the boards were shaped, we loaded up the Prius and headed over to the new shaping room to set things up. Then we had the huge task of moving all of our stuff into storage while we embark on a CA road trip.

We underestimated the amount of stuff 2 business and a couple can store in an 1100 sq. ft place, so we had to give the spillover away. Here, our friend scores an entire living room set, a bag of assorted sundries from the fridge, and an ice cold bottle of Jagermeister. Thanks for taking that of our hands.

The best scores were found in the alley. Thats where we left all the surfboards that were dinged, old, or just had nowhere to go. Here, the neighborhood paleontologist scores a surfboard on his rollerblades. I will miss the alley and the local bums. Gotta love Oceanside.

After the move out and clean-up we packed the car and the dog and hit the road. When we get back to SoCal, we'll still be making surfboards in Oceanside, but we'll be living in San Diego, closer to our roots and family. Change is good. Thanks 310 for the good times.

Slightly Stoopid Board

Yesterday, Daniel De La Cruz from Slightly Stoopid swung by the shaping bay to get a new board shaped. The board is actually a Rad Girls Surfboard we're customizing for De La. JP shaped the BFF to De La's specs and Andrea is going to paint Stoopid's Skull Kiss artwork on it. So stoked to work on this board.

A lucky fan won 2 cd's yesterday on the Rad Girls Surfboard facebook fan page. Congrats Spencer of PB.

JP, the board is so f**king awesome. I just got back from my first sesh on it and it was one of the best sessions I've had in a long time. I wish I could surf all day, and I also wish I had told you and Andrea I was going out on the off chance you could've met up with me- didn't think of it till I was in the water.
Seriously, you did an AMAZING job and it is exactly what I wanted. It's so responsive and maneuverable, easy to paddle and get into waves....it is PERFECT for me. I think the ultimate test will be when I take it out on a big day (the waves are pretty small today), but the surf today was my favorite conditions so that says a lot right there.

Stone Brewing Fundraiser Board

This custom Cherry Bomb was especially made for Stone Brewing Co. The asked us to make a donation to thei fundraiser for the Boys and Girls Clb of Escondido. Stone is a very generous company that also supports the Surfrider Foundation San Diego Chapter.

JP made the Cherry Bomb 6'0 x 19 3/4 x 2 1/2. I painted it to look like a stone that had been dipped in red. Pure Glass laminated it. It looks great, hope it makes a lot o money.

Custom Boards

Here at HSD we mostly sell custom boards to surfers that want something specific out of their surfing. Our Cherry Bomb model is a popular model. This one was custom made for Tanner, the generous owner of Cali Bamboo. He provided us FSC certified bamboo for the stringer and fins, we made a blank with post-consumer recycled styrofoam, and our buddy Woody hand-foiled his fins. Pure Glass laminated the whole thing with epoxy resin and Tanner is now surfing this board all around Sunset Cliffs and Blacks. He loves his new HSD Cherry Bomb and was stoked to contribute to the making of his custom board.

A Great Decade to Come

Back when we were kids, we all thought that by 2010 we'd be flying in cars, living in space, and would have destroyed Planet Earth. 2010 is just a few hours away and none of the Sci-Fi movies proved to be right. Life is still cruising along, but much has changed, and the next decade is sure to bring about some significant changes in surfing. Here are HSD's predictions for the next 10 years:

- People will be riding a variety of boards that are shorter and fatter than previous decades.
- People will experiment with fins, riding 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 fins
- Shapers with hand-shaping skills will still design the best boards
- Computers will not replace workers in surfboard factories
- Surfboard building materials will become more worker and environmentally friendly
- HSD is going to lead to the way in progressive designs that work for all surfer, not just pros
- California will continue to lead surf industry in design and style

HSD is celebrating their 5 year anniversary and hosted a raging party in downtown San Diego to celebrate. We invited out loyal customers, without whom we could not do what we do, and offered everyone in attendance a coveted Golden Ticket! We raffled off a beautiful triple stringer gun, perfect for gracing huge walls, of water or your home. Jimmy Greer of Surfrider took home the board, giving back to the community sure can pay off. We had fabulous prize packages thanks to our friends at OSIRIS, SRH, and HSD! My brother was the big winner of the evening, next time, get him to buy your wingspan.

HSD groms killed it at the Volcom "Youth Against Establishment" event held last weekend at Pinetrees in Kauai. HSD had 3 teamriders competing in the Juniors division, and we won 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. Nathan Carvalho came in first, his little brother came in 2nd, and young Jesse Gugleilmana came in third! Magical Land of Oz

Andrea was lucky enough to spend 31 days in Byron Bay, near the most Easterly Point of Australia. They were just going into springtime, so the wind was fairly cold and strong, but there were still a few days of solid swell. Broken Head was junky but fun, head high a few days. Lennox was good twice, once was a good session, once she wound up with stitches. That's Lennox for you, everyone has their Lennox story. The other spots on the surf tour- Cozy Corners, Tallows, Dolphins, The Pass, Clark's and South Wall. There is no denying that Byron Main Beach was positively off the hook one day, the locals say it only gets like that 3 days a year. Long rides, just overhead, offshore,barrelling, not too crowded, super consistant. If it was like that all the time, Andrea may never have left, but alas work calls and now she's back.

There were other fun activities to do like feed kangaroos, hike to the lighthouse, witness the start of the Transparentsea Voyage, and visit Crystal Castle. Byron is big on yoga and meditation, the best yoga class was above the Surf Club at Main Beach. Mel is an awesome yogi, there were usually only 2 students, and the sea breeze and view was amazing.

On the first day of Spring, October 1st in Australia, surfer Dave Rastovich and fellow whale-loving activists left for a month long journey to raise awareness about the plight of whales and Astralia's beaches. They took to the sea from Byron's main beach and are headed to Sydney, they should land November 5th. They are following the migrating humpback whales, stopping at beaches along the way to clean up trash, monitor rivers, and of course, surf. I was there to see them off and cheer them on. This is walking the talk, way to go!

2009 Paddle for Clean Water

September 13th, 2009 was the 18th annual Paddle for Clean Water presented by the Surfrider Foundation San Diego Chapter and Clif Bar. The event is free and aims to make people aware of the water quality issues along the 70+ miles of San Diego county's coastline. Every year, thousands of activists gather in Ocean Beach to let the local politicians know there is a problem and we care.

This year was the first year the life guards nixxed the paddle. The waves were macking, hitting the bottom of the pier, and a thousand people in the water would have overwhelmed the lifeguards. We had a "Surf-at-your-own-risk for Clean Water" instead. There was plenty in the way of entertainment on the beach: booths with eco-minded vendors, 91X streaming live, HSD board demos, educational opportunities, later a stage with tons of great bands, and a Stone beer garden.

The event was awesome as usual, and waves never spoil beach time for any surfer. If you missed it, come on out next year! Thanks to Jimmy Greer for the photos.

40% of cotton is wasted during processing, ending up in landfills. These recycled cotton T's use thise post industrial waste and make brand new shirts. You'd never know the difference, but you are doing a huge favor to the environment.

1/4 of all pesticides in the US are used on cotton crops. By using recycled cotton, less virgin cotton needs to be harvested, less pesticides get used.

Chemicals that have been banned for other crops can still be used on cotton, getting into our waterways and polluting our line-ups. Many rivers and outfalls have huge dead zones downstream from cotton farms. Poor fishes.

Rad Girls Stop By to Film Season 3

Like it or not, the Rad Girls just wrapped filming of season 3. Rad Girls are a crew of all-girl pranksters that perform sometimes disgusting, sometimes painful, but always hilarious stunts. This season they brought in a few more girls to spice it up, and Andrea Holeman was one of them. I don't want to spoil all of the fun, but I believe that season 3 will be AWESOME! Here, we are snorting 5 hour energy shots. It was more like drowning really.

The Sniper

The Sniper is a new model we are rolling out. It is our teamrider Nathan Carvalho's new secret weapon. The Sniper is a low-rocker, high performance shortboard for all waves. The low rocker and V in the nose help with paddling. Single concave under your front foot going to V in the tail increases rail rocker and decreases stringer rocker, which aids in speed and maneuverability. The swallow tail elongates the rail and adds drive. The rail at the center of the board is full, making a "forgiving" rail and adds volume where you need it. This board is good for shredding all kinds of waves and should improve your surfing.

Materials for Surfboards

Here at HSD we offer a variety of materials for our surfboards. All boards are hand-crafted in the USA by surfers.

Poly boards- these are traditional boards made from polyurethane blanks and polyester resin. The boards are lightweight and durable, but not indestructible. Dings can be fixed with epoxy or poly kits. We recommend these boards when performance is key, as many people like the flex and "life" of poly boards. It takes about a week to glass a poly board, but with solar catalyst this process can be done in 24 hours, but it'll cost you. The base price we quote you is for a poly board.

Epoxy- these boards are made with expanded-polystyrene (EPS) blanks, epoxy resin, and x-glass. Epoxy resin is stronger than polyester resin and doesn't give off as many VOCs (not as stinky) so some glassers prefer to work with it. The blanks are lighter and therefore you can get stronger glass without making the board heavier. Epoxy boards are more durable than poly boards, but still ding and when they do you need to make sure to get them out of the water ASAP. Dings can only be fixed with epoxy kits, the styrene in polyester resin will eat away at the foam. Epoxy resin tends to yellow, so we recommend keeping the board out of the sun completely for at least 5 days after the last coat of resin goes on. We recommend these boards for people that don't use board bags, really like light boards, or need extra float.

Eco-boards- this is the greenest construction we offer. We special make the blanks with at least 30% post-consumer recycled EPS, FSC certified bamboo stringer, and laminate them with a linseed epoxy resin. Everything can be washed up with soap and water. The boards are lightweight and strong and don't get those little cracks where heal compressions happen. Dings can be fixed with regular epoxy kits. We make sure that the companies we source these materials from do their best to run a green business. We recommend these boards for everyone.

August is Our Month

Recycled Surf Resin Jewelry

The Ray at Night art show opening was a huge success. Hundreds of people came by to learn about how Andrea Holeman recycles leftover surfboard resin and other plastics into beautiful jewelry. On display that night was also HSD's new eco-board made from a recycled EPS blank and linseed resin. The display will be at Soul Ryde for the next month, so if you are in North Park, swing by and check it out.

Why Surf Custom?

Recently, we have overhead kids at surfshops telling customers that custom boards don't work. We've even heard them saying they NEVER work. Now, I realize they are just trying to move all their made-in-Thailand boards and aren't experienced sales people, but its been starting to irk me. I'd like to share with you some of the history of surfboard building and why custom boards are still around today.

Hawaii is said to be the birthplace of stand up surfing. Construction of surfboards, and surfing, was a deeply spiritual undertaking. Boards were hand-crafted from solid wood for the individual intending to ride it. There were ceremonies involved and the Hawaiians performed rituals to bless the boards, to summon waves, and the act of surfing was held in high regard. Surfing provided training for the chiefs, resolved conflicts, and was a courting ritual. Surfboards were prized possessions that determined social standing.

As materials changed, so too did the art of surfboard building, but the surfboard shaper was always an integral part of a surfer's experience. In recent times, surfing as become a commercialized sport with businesses realizing the money-making potential of surfing and surfboards. I see nothing wrong with this as it is the natural progression of a free-market society.

What I do have issue with is the trend away from custom surfboards. When surfboards are built for surfshops, shapers make boards that will work for most people in most conditions. For someone that is new to the sport, buying a board of the rack may be the easiest way to get a board to get started. Once that person has learned to maneuver their basic surfboard, they are ready to begin to refine their gear for the conditions they surf in. Today, shapers don't even make most boards offered in surfshops. Machines and workers have replaced talented craftspeople and surfboard design is starting to suffer.

When someone asks me why they should buy a custom board, I like to relate an analogy. Think of a surfboard as a basketball shoe, if you want to run faster and jump higher, you don't go buy the same exact shoe Michael Jordan wears, you buy a shoe that fits your foot. You might even go through those treadmill tests where an expert examines your gait and pairs you up with the perfect shoe for you. Surfboards are kind of like that. If you want something specific out of your surfing, say to surf faster or ride in the barrel better, you should go to an expert who can examine you, your stance, and your surfing. This expert, or shaper, will then pair you up with the right surfboard for where you want to take your surfing and knows how to refine a basic shape or model to compensate for factors you might not even consider like if you turn with your front or back foot, wether you are goofy or regular, and how much push the wave has. Its the little details put into a surfboard that will determine the success you have with your new board.

The surfer-shaper relationship is not a thing of the past. If you have a good shaper, they will be interested in the feedback you give them about your board and how its affects your surfing. They can explain how the concaves and rail shape will be expressed in your surfing so you know what to look for when riding it. Then, when you are ready for a new board, they will ask you again what you would like to change and where you would like to take your surfing. A good shaper wants to help you improve your surfing experience.

If custom boards didn't work, do you think that all of the best surfers in the world would only ride custom boards? Make no mistake about it, the guys and gals you see winning contests, surfing death-defying waves, and in videos all ride custom boards. Even if you don't want that for yourself, you will be doing your surfing a disservice by always buying boards off the rack. In order to progress, you need to understand hydro-dynamics and surfboard design, if only superficially or intuitively. An expert shaper can help you understand how your board will perform and the limits of the design you choose.

So I invite you to order a custom board and start a relationship with a shaper. JP Holeman is our shaper here at HSD, and he has dedicated his life to improving your surfing experience wether you are a beginner, just trying to learn some new tricks, an aspiring pro, or trying to qualify for the world championship tour. The street closes down, the shops and galleries stay open late, bands play, and art lovers come to enjoy the talents of local artist. Saturday, July 25th we hosted a party downtown at the Bare Back Grill. It was a celebration of activists, activism, and beer! Hooray beer!

The folks at New Belgium Brewing Company wanted to focus their national ad campaign for Skinny Dip Ale on the recent success of the Surfrider Foundation to stop the toll road. They carted a van full of activists around Laguna for a day were we shot the ad. I think that its easier to do this in a river, but we got it down after 3 locations.

PJ, the owner of Bare Back and a huge Surfrider Supporter, offered to let us host a party. We got a few kegs of Skinny Dip Ale and a few bottles of Barefoot wine, invited some Surfrider peeps, got Luke Kinney and Lewis to sing and play guitar for us, and proceeded to raise some money for the local Surfrider chapter. By the end of the night, we raised $450 in proceeds and $60 from the raffle.

So, cheers! To Surfrider, to New Belgium Brewery, to Bare Foot wines, and to activists! Keep up the good work!

Check out the August 6 Rolling Stone, Jenny is interviewed in there about a TV project she has been working on called "Isolated". I've seen the trailer, it gave me goose-bumps. Its like Survivor meets big-wave surfing, where 5 feral surfers hunt down the biggest, nastiest wave they can find. Can't wait to see the whole show!

HSD hooked up with Jenny about a year ago in Santa Cruz. We sat down across from this beautiful, smiling woman who showed us pictures of her surfing Mavericks and Waimea. Funny, she didn't look like she had balls, but the photos proved she did. JP and her hit it off and he shaped a few boards for her and can't wait to see her in September when she'll be swinging by the Shaping Shack.

We are so stoked to work with her, and hope that we can keep making bigger and bigger boards for her. Oh, and we just got the good news, she's pregnant. These photos from Indo, pregnant. You go, girl!

American Surf Designs

What is American Surf Designs? Its a TV reality show, think LA Ink but for surfboards. In each episode, JP and Andrea Holeman make boards for different customers- from pro surfers to celebrities to charities- and you get to see all the drama that ensues with their glasser, Wyatt Henderson, at their shaping shack/house, and with all the characters around them.

You'll see some good surfing, hilarious moments at the house, and all the love that goes into each and every board. This is the true Southern California surf life, not some glossy image of one.

Performance Surfboards

Surfboard performance is the driving force of JP's designs. He strives to design and build boards that compliment and improve your surfing. Lately he has been working with his team riders to create boards that perform well in less-than-ideal conditions. It is not as often as we would like that the waves are firing, so we spend a lot of time surfing small waves, just like you.

The Groveler is a board specifically designed with kinda weak, kinda small waves in mind. We recommend you ride it 2" shorter, 1/8" thinner and a 1/4" wider than your normal thruster. It comes standard with a swallow tail, and all of our team riders have been liking them- Nathan Carvalho, Cody Leutgens, Jesse Guglielmana, and Jenny Useldinger have all been riding them this summer.

The Cherry Bomb is another good small wave board. This board has a thick round tail that makes it easy for you to get out of the white wash on mushy waves. Its a loose board that will still surf fast on good waves. Taylor Dodge and Pat Zabrocki have been loving these for a while. The Cherry Bomb is also a good board for practicing airs and is one of those boards perfect for a one-board quiver.

We also offer shapes and designs not shown on the website. Some that we like to ride are the Hyper-single, the Plank, the Four-Fin Fish, and our super-custom 5-fin bonzers. Nathan has developed a new model, based on his suggestions for the Groveler, that is about to be released. Our team rider Luke Kinney has been surfing a one-of-a-kind performance longboard and placing well in contests, and he's not even a longboarder! He swears its as easy to surf as his Cherry Bomb and won't give it back. And, as always, if you have something in mind you'd like to try, ask. Sustainable living refers to a lifestyle that minimizes your use of the Earth’s natural Resources. In the modern world, this includes reducing your carbon footprint by altering methods of transportation, energy consumption and diet. You try to live in balance with the Earth’s natural ecology and cycles.

In order to live in a sustainable way, the first thing we must change is our rate of consumption. Over-consumption exhausts natural resources too quickly, generates waste, and is prized in our society. Being aware of and limiting your consumption of unnecessary goods, packaging, and food is the first step in sustainable living.

Next, growth must be limited in terms of population, economics, and the environment. This is a big concept, considering things like the amount of food that can be grown in the climate, the amount of people a certain size land can support, distribution systems, and long-term global trends. In your daily life, these are the topics you consider when making important choices like where to live, where to get your food from, how many children to have, and how move around.

Finally, technology must become sustainable. It is unreasonable to think that human civilization will not continue to progress, so the focus of advancements need to be sustainable and beneficial. Technology that destroys natural systems is directly out of balance with nature and not sustainable.

Here in Oceanside, the late summer and early fall are really something special. Take yesterday and today for example. Yesterday was sunny and warm all morning and all day, with a beautiful sunset. Not many clouds, not too windy, borderline perfect. The swell was building nicely, overhead on the sets, pretty consistent, and still nowhere near peaking. Ended the day at a Surfline party overlooking the US Open of Surfing.

The water is warm, right around 72.

Woke up this morning to overcast skies, and perfectly still air. The swell is still building.

How to Order an HSD Surfboard

I just wanted to real quick explain the steps in ordering a custom board from us.

1. Decide on a board model you would like to ride and consider the dimensions and rail shape you like.

2. Email or call us to set up a consultation with JP. It can be done by phone or you can bring in the board you are currently riding. JP will ask questions about what you like/don't like, why you want to try the model you chose, how you'd like to improve your surfing, and if you are here he'll make you skate down the street to see how you use your legs and body to turn. This is 10-30 minutes. Together you will decide on final model, materials, and dimensions.

3. Place order and put down deposit. Cash or check is best, credit card is ok, too.

4. If you want, JP will have you come by when he hand-shapes your board. He lets you come in the room so he can explain what he is doing and how it will translate into your surfing. JP wants to improve your surfing experience and for you to begin to understand design and performance. Lots of shapers don't do this but we think its WHY you order custom boards. This is about 2 hours.

5. When your board is done, we call you. It usually takes 2 weeks from this point but we will give you an ETA. You finish paying and its yours, only thing left is to go surfing.

Surfrider and Green Boards

Last night's Surfrider meeting was about educating surfers on the greener options now available to surfers. The San Diego Chapter invited Ned Mc Mahon of Malama Composites, JP and Andrea Holeman, and shaper Jake Moss. Each company is trying to build a greener surfboard and lessen their carbon footprint. Everyone also agreed that the health of the people making the boards and materials was a big motivating factor to cleaning up the industry.

The surf industry is an old-fashioned and stubborn thing, especially when it comes to the building of surfboards. The technology used until Clark's closing in 2005 had been relatively unchanged since the 1950's, when foam cores were invented. Since 2005 there has been a rush of technology improvements and experiments to improve aspects of surfboard building. Its confusing for those of us in the industry to keep up with the different foams, what they are made of, what resin it needs, new epoxies, stronger cloths, and what fins and boxes are made from. I can't imagine a consumer trying to sort it all out, so Surfrider engaged us all in a discussion about greener options for surfboards.

Ned Mc Mahon is a great source of information. He thinks like a chemist, talks like someone that knows about composites, and really cares about worker's health and the environment. He's been leading green improvements for some time now and seems determined to educate consumers. He talked last night about ingredients in foam, resin, catalyst, and cloth. Ned explained that foam and resin can be made from basically any oil- soy, linseed, castor, petroleum- but there's really no getting around (yet) the toxic catalyst that account for less than 5% of the final products. He and Dan Van Zaten showed off a new Super "Green" surfboard that looks futuristic, but is a green option. There is no sacrifice on performance.

JP and I brought in a board Wyatt is laminating for me. It wasn't done yet, but it was good enough to explain what we have been working on lately. Its made with 30% post-consumer recycled styrofoam (we can get 100% now if you want it), a bamboo stringer, sealed with Elmer's glue, and laminated with a linseed epoxy. Everything can be washed up with soap and water. The fins are the tricky part. JP can hand-foil some from scrap wood if I want glass-ons, or i can just use Futures. Rumor has it they are going to be greening-up their fins and boxes because of demand, so thats good. JP and I try to run our business like we run our home- sustainable and green.

Jake Moss showed off his latest, tripped out design. Its made from locally sourced greener materials and has bamboo fins also made locally. The bamboo fin was an interesting story- the guy making them chose bamboo because of it strength and flex and didn't even realize or care that he had a greener product. Jake talked about durability, how any oil can be epoxified, and hemp.

The three presenters all proclaimed the same message really. There are green surfboards, not in stores yet, so you'll have to look around and ask for them. You can get greener, custom, hand-shaped boards that perform and last. Surfboard builders are striving for cleaner, safer work environments. The "Wal-Mart" mentality of cheap, cheap, cheap has all but made the once booming and revered craft of surfboard building an "endangered species". Smaller carbon-footprints are good.

Change starts small, change starts local, and change starts with you!

Green Surfboards

JP has always wanted to make high-performance, environmentally sound surfboards. Something that is not poisonous to the workers or the immediate surroundings. Something that maybe biodegrades or can be recycled. For past Surfrider events he has collaborated with other environmentally-conscious surfboard builders to create better boards.

What makes a surfboard green though? Is it taking TDI out of foam? Must it be all-natural? We at HSD have some opinions on this that we would like to share.

First, you vote with your dollars. Consumers are the best catalyst for change in business. If you, an eco-minded surfer, want a high performance board made from recycled foam that is durable, ask. If you keep showing up with money in your hand and leave without buying when you can't get what you want, businesses will notice. And change.

Second, there are different aspects to consider when thinking about "going green". If you want to lessen your foot-print and support local businesses, then order a durable epoxy hand-shape from a local shaper that gets boards glassed by surfers in your area. Take it one step further and ask about a blank made from recycled foam or plant-based linseed epoxy. Did you know that styrofoam can be recycled over and over again while retaining all of its virgin properties? Its about as recyclable as aluminum. An important note on the "durable is green" arguement is care. You need to take care of your board and fix dings properly in order for it to last.

Next, we realize that it is a big investment to buy a board made in a new, possibly experimental technology. The board may not come out as fast as "regular" boards and it might be hard to fix. Ask yourself, what kind of car do you drive? A new H3 or a Prius? Why didn't you buy the car that spends more on marketing, because you know that long-lasting environmental degradation is not cool. Ask your shaper or surfshop kid about technologies, feedback from people who tried the boards, how you can try a board, and just be interested in green technology.

Finally, change takes time so be patient and keep asking. Just be willing to experiment, be prepared for some room for improvement, and engage other surfers in discussions about green technologies. Be the change you want to see, isn't that what they say. If you want to learn more, swing by the Surfrider chapter meeting in Oceanside this Weds, July 15. Morning After Mess

The Surfrider Foundation always hosts a huge clean-up after the 4th of July, to clean area beaches from all the partying that goes on. This year the Oceanside location was at the South Harbor Jetty. While I'm sure it gets messy, I really wanted to clean my beach. So I signed in early, got some supplies, and headed back down to my house. JP, Derek and I all cleaned what was is our normal walk to surf.

There were cigarette butts, 275 Derek counted plus the hundreds JP checked off in groups of ten. There were bags and broken bottles, drink cups, razors, fireworks, and dead animals. The street sweeper must have drove by three times, and it seemed that for all that effort, the guy walking around with a broom would have actually cleaned something up instead of push trash towards the storm drains. At least we guilted some of the partiers in the neighborhood to sweep up in front of their house. Its a start.

After 2 hours of walking, stooping, and sweeping the three of us had collected 30 pounds of trash and almost 1000 cigarette butts. We, sadly, walked by the mother-load of Starbucks cups, because we really wanted to get to the beach. Waves are overhead and barreling, now is time for our reward.

Recycled Surf Resin Jewelry now on Ray St

I am finally making my way back to San Diego and my recycled surf resin jewelry is now on sale at Soul Ryde in North Park. Located at 3819 Ray St 92104, Soul Ryde is right in the heart of the burgeoning arts district in North Park. Several Saturday's a month the galleries in the area open and you can see some of fantastic contemporary arts. I'll be there in person soon.

My friends at Soul Ryde are the guys that do all the cool laser engravings and wood inlay projects with us. Just this year at the Ninth Annual Art Gala hosted by the San Diego chapter of the Surfrider Foundation, HSD, Soul Ryde, and our friend Wyatt Henderson collaborated to make an eco-friendly surfboard. The goal was to use little or no petroleum-based plastics or cancer-causing styrene, so JP shaped a plant-based blank without toxic whiteners, Wyatt laminated it with linseed resin, I painted it as always with low VOC acrylic paint, instead of stickers or laminants Soul Ryde reproduced classic Surfrider stickers out of scrap wood from their skateboard business, and then Soul Ryde hooked up a bamboo fin our friend Woody made. The result was a classic mini-noserider that makes you wonder why we use all the toxic stuff when there are perfectly good alternatives.

At the Soul Ryde shop they offer their cool custom skateboards, laser engraving for anything you can imagine, and recycled jewelry from local artists. Check them out!

Young team rider from Kauai, Jesse Guglielmana stopped by the shaping bay today to get a new groveler hand-shaped by JP Holeman. He studies JP's every move and asks questions as JP explains what to look for when Jesse surfs the board. Jesse will be competing in the NSSA Nationals starting tomorrow at Lowers in open juniors. Every Tuesday Farmer Donna and her crew swing by the HSD house and drop-off their goods. A few of our neighbors are on the program, why not you?

Morning Song Farm is a small, sustainable, organic farm that grows a variety of common and unusual subtropical fruits and vegetables. My favorites are the avocados and macadamia nuts. We get a large basket each week and are never out of delicious and nutritious fruits and vegetables. Each week you get whatever was picked fresh and Donna sends out recipes to try.

Organic foods are healthier, being raised without petro-chemicals so all you eat is food. Buying food from a local source secures local jobs, stimulates the local economy, and saves us all some greenhouse gas emissions. You can even bring your kids, or just yourself, up to the farm to help your food grow and learn about the entire process of sustainable farming. Sustainable farming plans for the future and takes into account the way nature actually works, so there is no need to pump tons of toxic "fertilizer" into to soil to force a crop to grow.

Hollywood and Rad Girls
